Reduce the Potential of Cracking
Whether your parts need quenched, normalized or welded, there is going to be some stress built up in the process. Stress on a part can lead to problems for the manufacturer. Cracking is a common result of too much stress and heat treaters need to find solutions to rectify these issues. Zion utilizes a stress relief heat treatment after performing its other processes on parts.
Zion Industries opened its doors in 1977 with one focus: to be the best induction heat treating company. From working through customers’ challenges to coming up with unique solutions, Zion is dedicated to their customers’ success. Knowing how much stress a part is facing is key to stopping cracking from occurring.
Why Use Stress Relief Heat Treatment?
Whether you’re working with wrought metals or powdered metal materials, there is always a potential for cracking. Stress relieving heat treatment reduces the danger of cracking in these metal parts by reducing the hardness, while improving the ductility.
Though it softens metal, it’s not used to alter the microstructure or mechanical properties of the treated metal part significantly.
What Does the Technique Involve?
- With each part, stress relieving involves heating at a temperature that allows internal stresses to be relieved in order to avoid part cracking and distortion.
- Using precise methods, we manage the increase in temperatures and subsequent cooling according to the heat treating process used and the part material.
- We work within appropriate temperature ranges so stress relieving doesn’t result in discoloration or produce a fine scale on the part.
- Parts are slowly cooled so that temperature changes don’t negatively affect or cause tensions in the material.
The goal is to ensure that each part can be used as planned, including in post-finishing operations like polishing and grinding.
In other words, we mitigate internal stress while taking steps to ensure that the part’s essential shape won’t be altered and that it will still perform well in its intended application.
