Avoid Mistakes During Hardness Testing
Hardness testing is one of the most common quality control checks performed during the heat treating process. In the induction heat treating industry, hardness testing is performed to determine the success or failure of a particular heat treatment application. Though the testing process may seem straightforward, there are many factors that can be overlooked.
Common mistakes during hardness testing
The top mistakes that occur result from a lack of specimen preparation, as well as cleanliness. Any surface the specimen comes into contact with must be extremely clean. In fact, the surface of the anvil is just as important as the surface of the part being tested.
Another common mistake made during hardness testing is having the individual hardness indentations too close together. Individual indentations should be at least three times the diameter of the indentation.
In addition, the stability of the test specimen should be considered. Determine the best hardness scale to use based on the thickness of the test piece, the hardened case and what cylindrical correction factors should be applied.
